PEERS TUTOR PEERS

BALTIMORE ALGEBRA PROJECT

The Baltimore Algebra Project is a peer-to-peer math literacy program. Founded by Civil Rights leader Robert Moses, the Algebra Project believes that math literacy is the gateway to jobs for the knowledge-based economy. Algebra Project participants are paid to tutor other high school and middle school youth in mathematics, using experiential pedagogy techniques to make math easier for youth to learn.

BALTIMORE URBAN DEBATE LEAGUE (BUDL)

High school students teach middle school students who in turn teach elementary students debate skills.  BUDL utilizes debate so students develop literacy, critical thinking, public speaking and research skills.  All participate in citywide tournaments; high school students compete statewide and at national and international tournaments.  BUDL currently has programs in over 60 schools in Baltimore.

YOUTH DREAMERS

The Youth Dreamers Homework Club employs middle school students at the Stadium School to tutor elementary students who attend Abettston Elementary School one-on-one.

SOUTHEAST YOUTH ACADEMY

Southeast Youth Academy (SEYA) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit community based organization. We work collaboratively with teens during out of school time to enrich their academic, social and cultural experience by providing scholastic support, creative programming, recreational activities and leadership training. SEYA is committed to helping teens in the Southeast Baltimore community grow into productive adults.

WIDE ANGLE YOUTH MEDIA

Wide Angle Youth Media is a Media literacy program that provides middle and high school youth with the skills and opportunities to tell their own stories using video and other media. Peers create videos and events, including and annual Youth Media Festival, to educate other peers about issues affecting youth and the city of Baltimore.

UNCHAINED TALENT

Unchained Talent is the STUDENT-DRIVEN PERFORMING ARTS and MENTORING PROGRAM, working to BRING THE ARTS BACK to the all youth in the Baltimore City Public Schools. Unchained Talent’s mission is to re-energize youth and school communities by providing performing arts opportunities in under-used school spaces, responding to young people’s personal and life skills developmental needs through organized trainings and consistent positive adult mentor relationships, and providing A PLACE FOR YOUNG PEOPLE’S VOICES TO BE HEARD. Youth write their own theater, music and dance works, guide the development of the organization and step up as peer and community leaders through their repertory and original artistic productions.

HIP HOP CONGRESS

Hip Hop Congress chapters engage in a range of activity promoting Hip Hop culture on their campus or in their community. They also collectively produce or sponsor roughly 200 events a year. Most chapters promote awareness festivals: a week of different events focusing on Hip Hop culture, as well as panels, speeches, emcee/bboy/DJ exhibition/battle, film screenings, etc.

COMMUNITY LAW IN ACTION

Community Law In Action (CLIA) prepares youth leaders to enhance the quality of life in their schools and communities. CLIA operates a variety of innovative programs serving youth aged 12-21, focusing on self-exploration, leadership development, problem solving, advocacy, youth organizing, community service, civic engagement, team-building, and exposure to personal and professional opportunity. It's Youth Action Workshops, Community Advocacy Clinic, Teen Leaders for Change programs enable young people to work with other young people to improve their communities.

KIDS ON THE HILL

Kids on the Hill is a community based organization offering young people support, quality programs and an opportunity to make change in their community through an experiential education approach to learning about social issues, art action projects and civic engagemen

STREET SOLDIERS

The Street Soldiers National Consortium is a group of organizations that have been trained in and use the Alive & Free Prescription to prevent violence in their communities. The Consortium seeks to find and develop new street soldiers. The Consortium President is Dr. Joseph Marshall. The Baltimore Consortium member is Safe Healing Foundation headed by Nzinga Oneferua-El. COMMUNITY CONFERENCING

Community Conferencing pays young people to be a part of “daily rap” where young people build a variety of social skills and are trained as daily rap facilitators, learning how to be neutral, non-judgmental and non-directive as they provide these safe, confidential and mobilizing sessions with their peers.

HAMPDEN FAMILY CENTER

The mission of the Hampden Family Center is to enrich the lives of Hampden residents through education and professional support, and to encourage individual growth and community fellowship.

PEERS TRAIN PEERS IN PRODUCING AND SELLING A PRODUCT OR SERVICE

LIBERTY LEARNING CENTER

Liberty Learning Center teaches young people catering, cooking, child care, and computer support as they relate to running a school-age child care center, and those young people are paid to train their peers in the same skills. 

CHESAPEAKE CENTER FOR YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

Chesapeake Center for Youth Development offers middle school youth the opportunity to get paid as managers of their own school store, Dollars and Changz. The managers supervise their peers who also work in the school store and train them in various aspects of business operation, including marketing, inventory, accounting, sales, writing business plans, staffing, store security, etc.

YOUTH ORGANIZING URBAN REVITALIATION SYSTEMS (YOURS)

YOURS creates a network of cooperatively run youth businesses recycling profits back into the community. The program has employed over 40 young people. These young people have developed an online t-shirt business and in June will be opening up the first community store. The store will allow the young people to gain hands-on business training and train other young people as they raise funds for schools, community service and youth programs. The store will feature products made by the young people participating in YOURS, as well as products from Peer-to-Peer Youth Enterprises.

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

Follow Your Dreams opened the first youth-run recording studio where young artists record their songs and the studio produces the CDs.  The young people who run the studio teach production, media, marketing skills to other peers.  Follow Your Dreams also has a youth center for young people in the Harwood community.

ENTREPRENEURIAL TRAINING UNIVERSITY (ETU)

The mission of the Entrepreneur Training University (ETU) Community School is to facilitate active community involvement with youth participants. The ETU is a holistic integrated systems approach program that encompasses all aspects of a youth’s life.Through the power of public and private partnerships, we teach youth business development, entrepreneurship, vocational training, educational excellence and life skills. YOUTH AS RESOURCES

Youth As Resources is a youth-led grant seeding agency. A Board of Directors -- made up of 22 young people from across Baltimore and 4 adult community leaders manage two grant cycles a year (one in the Spring and one in the Fall). Board members host workshops, design grant guidelines, request proposals, review applications and decide on funding awards.
